We're on our way (from misery to happiness today)

We started our road trip on a stormy, snowing and very cold winters day....seriously, not trying to start our trip off with a cliched line, it's true. Ask anyone. I skipped out of class at 3.15 and fifteen minute later we were on the way to the airport to pick up our car. The weather was treacherous, one of those really bad horror movie nights, where the weather is crappy, and then the car breaks down and then you have to walk to the nearest deserted town in the snow before a kind stranger takes you in, gives you dinner, and then kills you in some sadistic, cruel way. The snow and rain made the driving conditions quite difficult for Torben, but he did a super job (we arrived alive). Coincidentally we had quite a few highway stops...those ones in the middle of the state of NY, highway gas stations with country folk in the middle of nowhere. Seriously, if it was a movie, the plot would be firmly kicking off by now. We passed numerous towns in the middle of the snowy night that were deserted, Mick Taylor trucks and illuminated creepy windows every now and then. Sigh. North America how we love you. We had some dicey need-gas-need-gas-now-omg-we-need-gas-RIGHT-NOW, but hey we survived.

We had awesome party playlists that myself and Nicolai (bless his soul) had constructed - and he wasn't kidding when he said he had made specific playlists for all people in the 'party car', with voice overs targeted to each of us....so good. It was such a laugh. He spent a solid 8 hours before the trip on Garage Band, mixing and meshing his tracks and tunes together. Coincidentally we were 'the party car'; me, Annie, Bridge, Torben and Nicolai. A bunch of misfit Australians, Brits, Germans and Danes.

The drive was a good 8 hours, and we had some real bonding time in the car. I think in life it's the  moments that you don't forget, not where you were or what you were doing. Occasionally a old favourite tune would come on, and we'd all just sort of sing along (it was likely from Nicolai's 'sing along' playlist) and it was cute...sort of a bunch of friends from very different backgrounds, all bonding and having a mutual love for the music in common. Okay, whatever it's wanky. But it was nice. And we all have similar taste in music, so it was even better. I insisted on playing Bryan Adams '18 till I die' when we were crossing the border, cause duh, he's Canadian. Hence  also was rooting for Justin Beiber, which was surprisingly well received. Torben's favourite song was Miley Cyrus' 'Party in the USA' but I don't think that if you ever asked him he would admit to that. Damn gendered ideologies about masculinities and femininities. But he requested it. Numerous times. And knew all the words. It was glorious.

The party car kept us going all night until our stop. We hit heavy traffic getting out of Boston and crossing the state border to New York. We finally arrived at our stop over (Geneva, NY) around 1.30 am and it looked kind of like the motel out of  Psycho. Didn't help that it was late and snowy and terribly cold. We cracked open a beer and Nicolai played his party playlist. We also met up with the other car who constituted the other 8 for our road trip; Andreas, Kirsten, Maria, Javi, Pedro, Liz, Guillaume and Pierre. We fell asleep, 6 in two beds as it snowed outside and we tried hard not to think about Norman Bates and his poor old mum.

Yes that's me. Thank you Danes.
